Pregnancy Massage

Massage during pregnancy has been proven to be massively beneficial for both mother and baby.

There is ample evidence which supports the tremendous benefits of pregnancy massage; it can help to alleviate aches and pains and many other common health problems associated with pregnancy. It can also help reduce stress levels due to its calming effect.

Research shows that the baby can benefit greatly from massage as feel good endorphins are released by the mother during massage and passed on to the baby.

I use Neal’s Yard Mother Massage Oil in my pregnancy massage treatments. This is an especially nourishing massage oil for new mothers and all mothers-to-be. With organic soya and almond, the oil helps to tone the skin and prevent stretch marks.

Your health is of great importance to me, therefore I will carry out a consultation with you prior to any treatment taking place. If you are suffering from any health complaints it may be necessary to seek permission from your midwife/GP before carrying out the treatment. This is standard procedure and ensures that you will be getting the best, safest treatment possible at this special time in your life.

How does it work?

The massage is fully tailored to your needs; for some ladies this means an hour of relaxing full body massage to help them unwind and sleep well, for other ladies this may mean spending additional time focussing on problem areas such as lower back and hips.

The massages are mostly carried out in a side-lying or semi-reclined position with a supply of pillows and cushions to keep you supported and comfortable.

FAQ's

You can have pregnancy massage at any time during pregnancy provided that you aren’t experiencing any complication with your pregnancy.

Some women choose to wait until after their 12 weeks scan before starting with massage.

No, there is no evidence to suggest that massage causes any risks to the pregnancy at all during the first trimester.

The reason that many people avoid massage in the first trimester is because of the increased chances of natural miscarriage during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.

This is a decision that you can make for yourself.

My pregnancy massages are performed in a side-lying and semi-reclined position. We use pillows to ensure that you are comfortable and supported throughout.

It is entirely possible to massage the whole body without you laying on your stomach.

This depends entirely upon your circumstances. If you are experiencing pregnancy related pain and discomfort, it is advisable to have a few sessions close together to be able to sort the issues out.

If you are looking for more rest and relaxation then you can have them as often as you feel necessary. Many women aim for around one per month.

You may find that in the last trimester as you become more uncomfortable, you need a massage more regularly. However, my advise would be not to wait until pain and discomfort becomes an issue. Regular massage throughout the pregnancy can help to keep aches and pains at bay.

If you could arrive to your appointment in (or bring with you) clothes that make it easy for me to see your posture, this will really help to focus the massage on your needs.

During the massage itself, you will need to undress down to your underwear but you will be fully covered at all times to ensure your dignity.
